A bike innovation that should have been on every bike in the first place : TreeHugger

April describes A bike innovation that all city cyclists will covet the Bike Lift&Carry, which adds a retractible shoulder strap to your bike. It’s useful for a lot of cyclists who have to deal with stairs or get bikes up to their apartments or workspaces.

I smiled when I saw the post; It’s also a problem that has been around for a while. In Copenhagen, Mikael Colville-Andersen of Copenhagenize showed me one of his older bikes designed for urban cycling. It had a little folding handle built right into the bike, mounted in just the right place so that you could carry the bike like a briefcase under your arm. Mikael lists it at Number 3 of his Top Ten Details We Want Back and writes:

My Crescent bicycle has a handle on the tube which is wonderfully balanced and makes lifting up the bike easy as pie. Especially vintage Swedish bikes of various brands have this handle, but this was a design detail that was mainstream for a long time…. I don’t use mine that often, but I do on occasion and love it every time I do. Brilliant thinking.

It’s a sensible idea that could be part of any bike. Someone should scan, 3D print and kickstarter this!
