A Cheese Toastie Café Is Coming To Soho

melt-room-cheese-toastieLondon’s string of obscure café openings has gone into overdrive. We now have a cereal café, a cat café (and another on the way), a board game café, a porridge café and — despite the recent bad reaction to an owl bar pop-up — both a micro-pig picnic and a fox café pop-up seem to be on their way.

We can’t say we’re overwhelmed with most of these ideas, but the latest quirky caff is something we can certainly get behind. It doesn’t feature either animals or cereal, just good old cheese toasties.

Melt Room will open at an undisclosed Soho location in May, serving indulgent toasted cheese sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

But its not just a choice between cheese and onion or cheese and tomato on the menu. Toasties tipped to feature include a combination of slow-roasted lamb shoulder with mustard-dressed greens and Swiss cheese; a rare roast beef and red Leicester combo; a benedict melt featuring a cheddar-laced hollandaise sauce; and even a Full English melt.

We’re not sure whether we love the sound of that last one or it makes us feel a bit sick. Whether or not pickle will be present is also unconfirmed.

The man behind the idea is Andrey Datsenko. He studied hospitality in New York, where he formed a fondness for cheese toasties, and it seems like Melt Room’s offering will have a decidedly American accent. It will also have a backing track of pop to ensure the music is almost as cheesy as the food.

While street food stalls Grill My Cheese, The Cheese Truck and Morty & Bobs have been serving an extensive range of cheese toasties on London’s streets for some time, this is the first time the capital will have a bricks and mortar venue dedicated to these comfort food favourites.

Tell us what cheesy combination you’d come up with for a Melt Room toastie…
