Back of the net! Who would have guessed Norwich is the best place in Britain to be a child?

Alan Partridge may have been convinced that big-eared farmers in the area had 20ft tall chickens lurking in their sheds, but parents give it top marks for happiness.

The East Anglian city’s open spaces, gardens, playgrounds, sports centres and safe roads add up to a safe and fun-filled childhood.

Its only downside, according to the top 20 compiled by Panda Drinks, is the lack of hills for sledging in winter.

The most important feature for a fulfilling childhood is simply to have a garden to play in, according to the poll of 2,000 parents.

Worringly, 79 per cent of parents believe their children spend less time outdoors than they did themselves. Nina Uttley, brand manager for Panda Soft Drinks, said: ‘A happy childhood does not depend on the latest games, expensive gadgets and access to theme parks.

‘This survey shows just how vital the great outdoors can be.

‘Even if you live in an urban area, easy access to parks or playgrounds and a short drive to a beach or woodland can give children the active upbringing they deserve.’
