A drunk Royal Marine who bit the head off a pigeon for a ‘drunken prank’ has escaped jail after his legal team argued it would end his military career.

Commando Adam Karmali, 33, had downed 20 cans of lager during an all-day drinking session with friends on a trip to Cardiff before he committed the ‘repulsive act’.

He caught the bird in the street before posing for pictures with its head in his mouth, the South Wales Evening Post reports.

Karmali, who lives in Wimborne, Dorset, then bit the bird’s head off before spitting it out, Cardiff magistrates’ court heard.

Prosecutor Mike Curry said: ‘This was a sickening offence carried out while drunk.

‘Karmali captured a pigeon and put it in his mouth and as the group took pictures he bit its head off.

‘A witness was so appalled police were contacted, the remains were recovered and a DNA match was discovered which led him to being arrested.’

Monique McKevitt, defending, said her client was ‘ashamed’ of the prank after he admitted a charge of ‘not taking all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of an animal he was responsible for were met’.

He was given a 12 month community order and must complete 150 hours unpaid work.
