Two teenage members of a Japanese pop group have suffered broken bones and cuts on their hands, arms and heads in a saw attack.

Rina Kawaei, 19, and Anna Iriyama, 18, members of AKB48, were attacked at a meet-the-fans event in Iwate, northern Japan, on Sunday afternoon.

Kawaei and Iriyama were in a booth when a man suddenly brandished a 50cm (20 inch) saw, the Yomiuri daily reported.

Both girls are expected to be released from hospital on Tuesday, the band’s management said in a statement.

Police said a 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
