Many people who put on a few pounds are sensitive to comments about their waistline.
So imagine the dent your ego would take after being compared with a huge slug-like alien creature.
Alan Oates was so shocked when wife Helen called him Jabba the Hutt he lost 120kg (19st) in 18 months.
The former lorry driver, who suffered heart problems, weighed 212kg (33st 7lb) with a 172cm (68in) waist and needed an oxygen mask for 15 hours a day to help him breathe.
He gorged on fry-ups and takeaways, with his only exercise an after-dinner darts match twice a week down the pub – followed by another meal.
But now the 55-year-old said: ‘I’ve got a new lease of life. My wife tells me that she has finally got her husband back.
‘Helen has a photo of me, which I hate. My laptop is balancing on my big belly, and my wife joked that I look like Jabba the Hutt from Star Wars in it.’
Rather than use the Force – or a gastric band which he considered a ‘short-term fix’ – he contacted Slimming World after the picture was taken in January 2012.
He swapped fried foods for fruit and took regular walks with Helen. Mr Oates, from Tamworth, Staffordshire, has been named the group’s Greatest Loser 2014.
‘There’s no way I’m putting this weight back on,’ he added.
