A suspected cannibal should be given a vegan diet, according to animal rights organisation PETA.

The charity has now weighed in on a case involving 33-year-old Joseph Oberhansley, who was arraigned in court on charges of killing his ex-girlfriend, Tammy Jo Blanton, 46, and eating her flesh.

PETA is urging Brian Meyer, the Sheriff of Clark Co., Indiana, to feed Oberhansley an all-vegan diet while he’s imprisoned, to ‘swear off flesh.’

The organisation wrote a letter to Sheriff Meyer suggesting a vegan diet would temper violent criminals like Oberhansley.

Speaking to the Register-Herald, PETA spokesman Kenneth Montville said, ‘We really want to take a situation that’s a tragedy and make it into something positive.’

‘For us, it is about reducing violence by opting for vegan food,’ he added.

Meyer added: ‘That they would do this is unfathomable to me. It’s unforgivable and they’ve lost all credibility with me.’
