Apple offers coding workshops as part of Hour of Code project

Learning to code is becoming seen as a vital skill in the digital era

Apple has thrown its weight behind the Hour of Code project by offering lessons at its Apple Stores around the world, including in London.

The Hour of Code is a week-long event that runs in conjunction with Computer Science Education Week from 8 to 14 December.

The project has the backing of top tech and political heavyweights, including US president Barack Obama who launched it with a message on YouTube.

“Don’t just consume things, create things. Take an hour to learn more about the technology that touches every part of our lives. That’s how you can prepare yourself with the skills you need for your future,”  Obama said.

The Apple event in London takes place at the firm’s Regent Street store on 9 December at 7pm. It will be led by Torsten Reil, CEO of games developer Natural Motion.

Reil will discuss the reasons that led him to start learning to code and how the development of mobile gaming can inspire people to get involved in technology.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of internet software and services, said that the company is glad to help out with the Hour of Code initiative.

“We are proud to be part of making computer science accessible to students of all ages around the world,” he said. “Education is part of Apple’s DNA and we believe this is a great way to inspire kids to discover technology.”

As well as Apple’s involvement there are 1,131 events taking place across the UK at schools and social clubs as part of the Hour of Code initiative.

The website also has several games and activities for young people to try out and get a taste for coding, including a game involving two characters from Frozen, Anna and Elsa, to understand the basic components of writing code.

The efforts to get more youngsters coding will no doubt be welcomed by the UK government, which unveiled plans on Monday to revamp the computer science GCSE to ensure that enough skilled IT workers are available in the future.
