Over 100,000 businesses have rushed to purchase the shorter .uk web suffix, including big names such as Apple, Amazon, Starbucks and Debenhams.
Nominet, the register handling the .uk rollout, reported breaking the 100,000 registrations milestone on Thursday. The .uk suffix launched in June, costing £3.50 for single year and £2.50 for multi-year registrations.
Nominet said the month following the launch was “its biggest selling in almost 14 years” and helped lead to a spike in .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk, as well as .uk registrations. Nominet reported taking in a total of 225,000 domain registrations in June.
The .uk suffix is designed to help boost the nation’s digital economy by making it easier for businesses to develop and expand their presence in the UK.
Specifically, the .uk suffix is designed to let companies tailor their online offering to UK shoppers. However, many firms will have also bought the domain as a protective measure to stop squatters and may not intend to actually use the domain for any front-facing websites.
Nominet reported taking in 50,000 .uk registrations within 24 hours of launch prior to the 100,000 milestone. Nominet chief operating officer Eleanor Bradley cited the rapid early adoption as proof the strategy is working and the UK’s digital economy is growing.
“Given that the domain name market is more competitive than ever before, this is a fantastic endorsement of the power of the UK brand,” she said.
“We’re pleased not only that our new .uk domain has hit this milestone, but that other .uk domains such as .co.uk and .org.uk continue to be so popular as hundreds of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) hit the market. It shows that highlighting your UK connection continues to be a compelling prospect for businesses and individuals online.”
