BBC to broadcast 360-degree video from Olympics

The BBC has launched an experimental Sports app that promises to provide 360-degree coverage of the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The new app, available from today for iOS and Android devices, will also include fully-immersive video of the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as a whole host of the live events – like athletics, boxing and more. On-demand replays of these will then be available.

That doesn’t mean, however, that you can just pick any old listing and expect to see it in 360-degrees as only certain events – there will be at least one from each day’s schedule though (see the full run-down below).

The corporation is hoping to provide viewers with a choice of four different camera angles for each event, and is aiming to amass around 100 hours of 360-degree footage over the course of the Games.

To watch along, you’ll need to pop your phone into a Cardboard (or similar) headset and start the app – it will also work with Samsung Gear VR.

And if you don’t have a headset at all, you can get a taste of the experience by going to the BBC Taster site. Or, there are a whole load of other (some more conventional) ways to keep up with the Olympics.
