It has been thirsty work and there are many more pints of ale to be supped on Cathy Price’s quirky pub crawl.

But the end is in sight in her quest to visit every Red Lion pub in Britain, after she drank at the 500th inn bearing that name at the weekend.

There are 120 to go and Mrs Price hopes to finish the job in six months.

She has travelled 33,000 miles and spent £12,000 on her challenge so fa starting in 2011 when she visited The Red Lion in Hawkshead, Cumbria, and discovered it was the most common pub name in Britain.

‘People think I’m crazy but it’s so worth it,’ said the personal trainer, 55, of Preston.

With Red Lion No.500 – in Dagnall, Buckinghamshire – ticked off she aims to end her journey at The Red Lion at Gatwick airport.

‘I just hope I don’t have to buy a plane ticket to drink there,’ joked the mother of one.
