BlackBerry BES10 now available as a hosted service

BES 10 can be used to manage BlackBerry and third-party devices

BlackBerry has made its BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES10) platform available as a hosted service that can be delivered by telecoms and other service providers rather than installed and managed by a customer.

The firm said that its BES10 Hosted will enable organisations to benefit from the enterprise mobility management (EMM) and advanced security capabilities of its platform, while taking advantage of the expertise of a BlackBerry hosting partner to manage their IT environment for them.

Writing on the firm’s Business Blog, BlackBerry senior director for Enterprise Product Management Jeff Holleran said that hosted model is changing how organisations approach traditionally on-premise IT services.

“BES10 Hosted is a scalable solution, meaning that businesses from one employee to thousands of employees can leverage the flexibility, convenience and cost-effectiveness of outsourced IT administration while still retaining a laser focus on data security,” he said.

As with the standard on-premise BES10 server, the hosted service enables customers to support their mobile workers with a range of devices, including BlackBerry 10, iOS and Android devices. It also has support for securely separating work and personal information via BlackBerry Balance on BlackBerry’s own handsets, or BlackBerry Secure Work Space for iOS and Android.

BlackBerry’s platform is still widely regarded as the gold standard for management and security features when it comes to operating mobile devices, despite a growing challenge from firms such as MobileIron, VMware’s AirWatch and Good Technology.

“BES10 delivers proven BlackBerry security and controls to organisations of all sizes with mixed mobile environments. It’s optimised for multi-platform BYOD environments, as well as for industries with the most stringent security requirements,” Holleran said.

For those companies looking to control costs and limit their in-house IT resources, BES10 Hosted will allow them to deploy BlackBerry’s trusted, secure service within their organisation with ease, he added.

However, the only service providers currently offering BES10 in the EMEA region are all based in Germany, with the list including ISEC7 and IBM Deutschland. At the time of writing, BlackBerry had not responded to requests from V3 on whether any UK service providers were planning to offer the service in the near future.

Pricing will also be dictated by the hosting partner, but these will be able to offer differing tiers of service to meet the security, device and application management needs of their customers, BlackBerry said.
