BlackBerry has officially made available its cloud-hosted service based on the BES 12 server platform for enterprise mobility and management (EMM) of mobile devices that it unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) earlier this year.
BES 12 Cloud offers the same capabilities for managing a range of mobile devices and applications as the on-premise BES 12 server offering, but delivered as an online service with a subscription pricing model rather than being deployed on the customer’s network.
This makes it a simpler and more convenient choice for managing iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10 smartphones and tablets, according to BlackBerry, as well as supporting Samsung Knox and Android for Work smartphones and tablets.
Writing on BlackBerry’s Business blog, enterprise social marketing manager Ali Rehman said BES 12 Cloud makes mobility easier for businesses, especially smaller companies that might otherwise lack the resources to deploy and operate an on-premise BES server.
“For SMBs looking to mobility to help start and grow their business, BES 12 Cloud makes managing apps and data easy with a cloud-based EMM solution that is secure, flexible, simple to deploy and easy to use. Businesses powered by BES 12 Cloud are more protected and more productive,” he said.
The firm claims BES 12 Cloud lowers operating costs by eliminating the need for server software, hardware and licences, but keeps to the same annual subscription pricing as on-premise BES12, with BES 12 Cloud Silver and Gold subscriptions being billed annually on a per-device basis.
BES started out as a management service for BlackBerry’s own devices, but the firm has responded to today’s multi-platform world by adding support for iOS, Android and Windows Phone, plus mobile application lifecycle management.
The company has also been building a suite of business applications that build on the security features of BES to enable features such as secure messaging and even secure voice calls.
BlackBerry is offering a free 30-day trial of BES 12 Cloud, which includes 50 Gold subscriptions to enrol BlackBerry smartphones, 50 Secure Work Space subscriptions to enrol iOS and Android devices, and unlimited access to technical support.
