BT 4G business services to arrive ‘within weeks’

BT has introduced its first 21CN service for global organisations

BT has confirmed it will start offering 4G services to businesses in the coming weeks, with a consumer service to follow in 2015.

BT was a notable winner of spectrum in the auctions, paying £186m for three blocks in the 2.6GHz band, which offers excellent long-range coverage and is already being used by EE and Vodafone for their 4G networks.

On its Business Mobile website, BT is inviting enterprises to register their interest in 4G, promising the service will launch this summer.

“We will launch innovative new mobility services for business in the coming weeks and the first consumer services by April next year,” BT confirmed in a statement to V3.

The consumer services will be offered using EE’s network as part of the mobile virtual network operator deal the two companies struck last year. It is not clear whether the business service is to be offered on the EE network or on a dedicated network using BT’s own spectrum holding.

On its Business 4G Services page, BT touts the network as being able to provide numerous benefits for firms over existing 3G networks.

“The download and upload speeds of 4G mean your people can take mobile data way beyond email and calendar. Video conferencing is also a real possibility – saving time and money,” it claims.

“4G gives more reason than ever to make the most of the cloud. Back up valuable data so it’ll never be lost. Or use your tablet to download and showcase catalogues or brochures to customers and save on expensive printing costs.”

Uptake of 4G is increasing all the time, with EE’s service now available in over 200 towns and cities, and O2 and Vodafone also growing their user bases.

Furthermore, Vodafone recently teamed up with Huawei to demonstrate how 4G could be used for small cell networks to boost coverage across indoor and urban environments.
