Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, has said that he saw a UFO during the 1969 Apollo 11 flight – but denied it was extraterrestrial.

During a Reddit ‘ask me anything’ Q&A session, the 84-year-old astronaut said that he saw something from the spacecraft didn’t believe it was anything out of the ordinary.

‘I observed a light out the window what appeared to be moving alongside us,’ he said.

‘There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world – it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the four panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket.’

Mr Aldrin’s revelation delighted conspiracy theorists and triggered claims of a cover-up from some corners.

He admitted when he first disclosed the observations on a foreign television network some years ago, ‘the UFO people in the United States were very very angry that I had not given them the information.’

But while Mr Aldrin acknowledged that extraterrestrial life somewhere in the galaxy was likely, he warned against taking every bizarre sighting as proof of alien existence.

‘There may be aliens in our Milky Way galaxy, and there are billions of other galaxies,’ he said.

‘The probability is almost certain that there is life somewhere in space.

‘But extraordinary observations require extraordinary evidence.’
