A young boy dying of cancer has been granted his final wish for a last hug from his estranged mother.

The 11-year-old is suffering from a rare form of kidney cancer, which has caused him to lose nearly 60lbs in weight and made him very weak.

Cao Zongchao had not seen his mother, 39-year-old Qian Baofeng, for years after his parents split in an angry divorce in 2011.

And the mother of the former star pupil nearly did not turn up due to the acrimonious ending of her relationship with the boy’s father.

However, she relented and has not left Cao’s side since.

Qian told reporters: ‘It is heartbreaking. I can only hope to make his passage into death easier.’

Cao is in the later stages of the disease and is not expected to live much longer.

His mother has been given a room at the hospital to be by her son’s side.

An unnamed hospital doctor said of the mother: ‘[She] hates the father, not the boy, but it meant she was reluctant to come and see him.’
