An elderly couple stepped in front of a speeding freight train after their 50-year-old daughter moved back into their home with her partner.

Peter Smith, 80 and his wife Betty, 78, stood on the tracks a short walk away from their Lincolnshire home in the village of Cherry Willingham reportedly as a result of ‘family issues’, police said.

Neighbours have claimed the couple had a turbulent relationship with their daughter, Jane, even before she moved in with her partner and their belongings.

Geoff Walpole, 70, who lived two doors down from the couple, alleged that on the tragic day, there was a ‘big row’ between them and their daughter.

British Transport Police are investigating the incident but said they are not treating it as suspicious.
