Security was always going to be tight at the Commonwealth Games but you’d have thought if anyone was going to enter the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome without trouble, it would be Sir Chris Hoy.

But the Olympic cycling champion was turned away from the arena that bears his name because a security guard did not recognise him.

The 38-year-old Scot was refused entry after failing to produce the correct accreditation – presumably his six gold medals and position as Britain’s most successful Olympian ever don’t count.

The dozy security guard was embarrassed to learn of her mistake, saying: ‘Please, please can you apologise to him.’

She said Sir Chris had been on the phone at the time, adding: ‘I didn’t realise who he was. My mum is going to kill me!’

Sir Chris was eventually allowed in to describe yesterday’s action in the velodrome.

‘All set and ready to go here at the velodrome, nice vantage point here up in the commentary box!’ he tweeted.

He took the incident in good humour and defended the guard, writing: ‘She was only doing her job!!’ Earlier this week, gold medal-winning cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins complained that Sir Chris had been ‘done over’ by the velodrome’s corporate branding.

Wiggins said: ‘I’d be a bit p***** off if I were him, because they’ve stuck a great big Emirates sign over his name and it doesn’t stand out that it’s the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome other than a little thing as you walk in.’
