Competitors got down and dirty for charity at this year’s Maldon Mud Race.

Hundreds of brave participants ran across the River Blackwater in Maldon, Essex, at low tide which resulted in them being covered in mud.

One of the highlights of the race was when Joel Hicks lost his swimming trunks and had to finish the dash in nothing but his boots.

Several people also wore fancy dress costumes on Sunday, including Teletubby and pirate outfits.

The race started in 1973, after a local resident made a challenge to the landlord of the Queens Head public house in Hythe Quay.
