A mother-to-be and her fiancé died in a road crash only 30 minutes after finding out they were to be parents.

Hannah Sanders took a pregnancy test and then collected the keys to a new flat with boyfriend Lee Palmer, an inquest heard.

They were driving to his mother’s home in Woldingham, Surrey, when she lost control of her Renault Clio and skidded across the road straight into the path of a Toyota Hilux.

It was driven by Rita Heath, 75, who told the hearing in Woking how she saw the car ‘slide’ across the B269 in Surrey before the two vehicles collided.

She told the inquest: ‘I looked and thought ‘‘My God, they are on my side of the road’’.’

Mrs Heath said there was ‘no way’ she could have avoided the car on April 25 at 1.45pm. She told the court: ‘It was over in seconds.’

Ms Sanders, 20, and Mr Palmer, 26, both worked in a Morrisons supermarket in Oxted, Surrey.

They met at secondary school and were childhood sweethearts.

Ms Sanders’ mother Patricia said: ‘One minute Hannah and Lee were celebrating the new life inside her and the next they were gone.’

Coroner Simon Wickens said: ‘In reality, we shall never know the reason Hannah lost control.’
