A newborn baby girl has been found dead in a wheelie bin, prompting a police appeal to trace the mother.
Officers were called to a communal area in Richmond, North Yorkshire, after the body was discovered by a member of the public at around 2.40pm.
Paramedics were unable to revive the girl and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Inspector Mark Gee, of Richmond’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Enquiries are at a very early stage and our primary concern is to locate the mother of the newborn baby girl to ensure that she receives urgent medical care.
“It is highly likely that the mother is in a very distressed state and needs professional support.
“We urge her to contact the police or medical staff as a matter of urgency as her health and wellbeing is the priority.”
Anyone with information that could help identify the mother, or with any other information that could help investigating officers, is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
