Dell has unveiled a refreshed portfolio of Ethernet network switches for the data centre, aimed at helping customers move towards a software-defined networking (SDN) architecture. One model is a multi-rate switch capable of handling up to 100Gbps per port.
The new products, the Dell Networking Z9100-ON, S4048-ON and S3048-ON, are intended to offer greater choice in the data centre when deploying an SDN architecture, and are also claimed to offer a substantial cost savings over comparable switch products from rivals, although Dell declined to detail pricing.
All the new switches support the Open Network Install Environment, which provides a zero-touch installation capability for all pre-qualified operating systems, including Dell Networking OS 9 and third-party platforms including Cumulus Linux and Big Switch Networks Switch Light, Dell said.
The firm seems most proud of the Z9100-ON, which it describes as a state-of-the-art 100Gbps fabric switch for aggregation and access layers. This features multi-rate switching at 10/25/40/50 or 100Gbps per port, supporting 32 ports at 100Gbps. 64 ports at 50Gbps or 40Gbps, or up to 128 ports at 25GBps or 10Gbps.
Dominique Vanhamme, Dell’s head of networking in EMEA, claimed the firm is leading the way with the Z9100-ON.
“This is the first multi-rate switch on the market, and we have at least a six to nine months advance on anyone else,” he said, although the product is currently not due to be available until the second half of 2015.
The S4048-ON is available now, and is described as an ultra-low latency top-of-rack switch, supporting large hardware tables and VXLAN packet encapsulation. It supports 48 10Gbps ports and six 40Gbps ports, making possible a total of 72 10Gbps ports with breakout cables.
Finally, the S3048-ON is another top-of-rack switch, but aimed at enterprise and mid-range customers with an existing 1Gbps network infrastructure. It features 48 1Gbps ports, with four 10Gbps uplinks.
The S3048-ON is Dell’s first entry into 1GbE open networking switching, and features half the power consumption and costs 50 percent less than the current generation of Dell 1GbE switches. It will be available from May.
