Denmark and the US are two of the biggest suppliers of sperm to the UK.

Figures from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority have come to light after experts raised fears over a national sperm shortage.

The latest statistics show that overseas imports account for nearly one quarter of all donated samples in the UK.

At its peak donations from abroad have topped 114 in one year, compared with 367 here.

But back in 2005 overseas donations accounted for just 11 per cent of all samples in the UK per year.

Experts believe more were likely to donate back when donors had the right to anonymity. This was removed in 2005.

Denmark is home to the world’s largest sperm bank and the UK harnesses a large amount of sperm from there as well as the US.
