Customisable homes, which allow future buyers and tenants to co-design their premises — including number of rooms, layout and fittings — have been given the go-ahead in the Custom House area of London’s Docklands.
The innovative concept, which aims to enable people to tailor their homes to their budget, will be brought to life by East Thames Housing Association on land currently occupied by five garages, a five-minute walk from Custom House DLR station.
The pilot has been helped with a low-cost loan of £1.9m from City Hall, which will no doubt be watching the outcome of the scheme with a view to rolling the concept out across more areas of London.
Cllr Ken Clark, cabinet member for Building Communities, Public Affairs, Regeneration and Planning for Newham council, said: “This is another welcome addition to the regeneration of Canning Town and Custom House and an exciting time for the area as some of the early phases are being completed. This development is a wonderful opportunity that will meet residents’ unique needs and requirements; we hope that this will become a template for future house building schemes.”
