In a controversial move, El Salvador has transferred 1,177 gang members into prison cells they will share with a rival gang.

This drastic move comes as violence between the Barrio 18 gang and the Mara Salvatrucha gang, or MS-13, have caused great alarm across the small Central American country.

These photos show the heavily tattooed members of Barrio 18 being herded from Izalco jail to San Francisco Goter penitentiary.

The aim of this decision is to hopefully prevent the gang’s continuing their operations behind bars.

To give an understanding of the level of violence these two gangs have instigated, El Salvador’s government has authorised the police to shoot gang members ‘without any fear of suffering consequences’.

Just last week, eight gang members were killed in a confrontation with police on a coffee plantation.

MailOnline reported that 300,000 people recently marched on the country’s capital calling for an end to gang violence.

Salvadoran President Salvador Sanchez Ceren said at the march: ‘This is a fight that we are going to win, all Salvadorans, because we are going to take on the challenge of continuing to work for the respect for life, to deepen peace, and to make sure that justice prevails.’
