Father Heartbroken After Daughter Taken To US

The father of an eight-year-old girl who was unlawfully taken to live in America by her mother says he will not stop until his he is reunited with his daughter.

Nathan Lawrence from Birmingham has been fighting for his daughter’s return in the Family Courts for months in private but in an unusual step by a judge, he’s been given permission to make his case public.

Mr Lawrence told Sky News that he has tried everything to get his ex-partner Natalie Lewis to bring eight-year-old Jessica Monkman home since they moved without warning in March.

It’s believed the mother and daughter are living in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mr Lawrence said: “The first I heard about the disappearance was from the school.

“I dropped Jessica off on the Friday and later the next week her teacher called me to ask why she had missed school.

“I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye. I’m heartbroken, I feel like life has just paused.”

West Midlands Police has been working with local police in Ohio to investigate the ‘abduction’ but since a ‘safe and well’ check was carried out with the mother and daughter, nothing has happened.

Pam Sanghera, who is representing Mr Lawrence, said Ms Lewis was ordered to return their daughter in October, but “she has made no effort whatsoever to attempt to comply”.

“The father has not had any direct or indirect contact with the child since he last saw her in March,” she said.

Mr Lawrence and Jessica’s mother separated in 2010 after a 10-year relationship, his lawyer said.

After Ms Lewis married an American man, a judge ruled that Jessica could not be removed from the UK without permission from a court.

The case has been the subject of a private family court hearing for months, but a High Court Judge has now allowed the details to be made public in the hope it will encourage Ms Lewis to return.
