First full trailer and cast list for Big Hero 6 revealed (Wired UK)

Disney’s Big Hero 6 – Official US Trailer 1Walt Disney Animation Studios

The first full-length trailer for Disney’s upcoming animated
superhero flick Big Hero 6 has hit the net — and it’s a
weirdly sedate introduction to the comic book team.

Rather than channelling the action-packed spirit of the
Avengers or X-Men, the
trailer
goes for more of a detective story vibe. Main hero
Hiro (geddit?) tries to get the attention of the authorities after
being attacked by Yokai, the
Kabuki-mask wearing villain of the piece, before showing audiences
their first glimpse of the rest of the team — all still in
civilian mode, and caught in a car chase rather than rounding up
bad guys.

As a ‘main’ trailer, it’s surprisingly low-key. There’s no
showcase of super-powers or anything flashier than Hiro’s robot
Baymax testing out his flying gear, but it does lay the groundwork
for the movie’s core plot. Yokai commands an army of microbots (and
we’ll refer you to the hypothesis of grey goo if that
doesn’t seem scary), with the team coming together after no one
else believes them over the threat. The clip also highlights the
surprisingly dry humour directors Don Hall and Chris Williams
employ in the film.

In the comics, each of the team members — speedster GoGo Tamago,
monster-man Fred, energy
swordsman Wasabi,
and Honey
Lemon
, who can pull anything from her transdimensional purse –
has their own origin, though in the rejigged world of the film,
Hiro uses his genius to “transform the group into a band of
high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery”. The team was
also entirely Japanese in origin, where here they’re a more
ethnically diverse group, and defend the fictional San Fransokyo
rather than Tokyo.

The trailer comes in the wake of Disney finally announcing the
full voice cast, which includes Ryan Potter as Hiro,
30 Rock’s Scott Adsit as
Baymax, TJ Miller
as Fred, Disney mainstay Jamie Chung as GoGo
Tamago, Damon Wayans
Jr
as Wasabi, and Genesis Rodriguez as
Honey Lemon. The film will also star comedian Maya Rudolph and
Firefly’s Alan Tudyk. No doubt
a flashier trailer will follow soon, showing them in their more
heroic roles.

Big Hero 6 is set to open on 7 November in the US, with
international dates still to be announced.
