Gay employees should be sent to Russia in a bid to change the country’s attitude toward homosexuality, Lord Browne has said.
The former chief executive of BP and current chairman of controversial fracking firm Cuadrilla called on British businesses at the Hay Literary Festival.
He was there to promote his new book The Glass Closet: Why Coming Out is Good Business.
The 66-year-old said: ‘Should BP send gay people into Russia? I think yes you could do that. Provided that you are very aware you are sending them into a place of extreme risk.’
‘What you need is attitude change and corporations so set norms of behaviour in other countries. By example they are slowly moving things forward,’ reports the Telegraph.
Lord Browne added gay employees should make their sexuality known to new employers as soon as possible to avoid ‘living with all those fears’.
