Freddo the Frog chocolate bar is ‘funding terrorism,’ apparently

An Australian politician has spectacularly taken exception to the chocolate bar Freddo, somehow managing to link it with terrorism.

In a post on his blog, George Christensen MP hit out at the ‘politically correct commentariat’ who ‘sneer’ at those concerned about halal certification.

And Mr Christensen went on to speculate that by buying some Australian groceries you could be ‘supporting jihad groups’ or ‘backing terrorist activity’ through the groceries’ halal status – pointing to an Islamic organisation in America involved in halal classification that was on trial for financing Hamas.

‘I find it outrageous that some of my grocery spending could go to propagating a religion. Worse still, I don’t know whether my grocery spend is going to fund extremist versions of that religion or extremist religious activities that I would rather not see in Australia,’ he writes.

Think twice before you buy one of these (Picture: Cadbury’s)

‘And it seems with the vast range of products that are now halal approved, including Vegemite, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Cadbury’s Freddo Frog, it’s almost impossible to escape it.’

Mr Christensen’s ‘logic’ – just to recap – is this:

1) Freddo the Frog is halal in Australia.

2) Some of the money spent on halal items in Australia may go to an Islamic group in Australia that deals with halal certification.

3) An Islamic group in America that deals with halal certification was on trial for funding Hamas (no evidence of ties to terrorism were found, incidentally).

Therefore, 4) Freddo the Frog is funding terrorism.

That, Mr Christensen, is what we call tenuous.
