Galaxy S5 Mini on sale in UK from 7 August for £390

Samsung S5 Mini coming to the UK in August

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S5 Mini will hit UK stores from 7 August, with its Galaxy Young 2 following a week later.

As the name would suggest, the Galaxy S5 Mini is a smaller version of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S5 smartphone, but it will still cost a hefty £389.95 at launch.

It comes equipped with a 4.5in HD Super Amoled display and shares some of the specifications found in its bigger brother, including a fingerprint scanner and connectivity with Samsung’s wearable devices.

LTE connectivity, a 1.4GHz processor and 1.5GB of RAM allows the S5 Mini to handle multi-tasking and rapid webpage loading while on the move. A high-resolution 8MP camera takes care of the phone’s photography functions.

Meanwhile the Galaxy Young 2 is a more affordable and compact addition to Samsung’s smartphone range. Its 3.5in HVGA display is powered by a 1GHz single-core processor and 512MB of RAM, and supported by a 1,300mAh battery.

While a 3MP camera might leave the phone’s photography ability wanting, the Young 2 comes loaded with the Android 4.4 software that should please fans of Google’s mobile operating system.

V3 contacted Samsung for pricing of the Young 2 but this information was not forthcoming.

With Samsung revealing that its profits have dropped by 20 percent, in part due to poor S5 sales, the company will likely hope that the S5 Mini is better received in the UK than its predecessor.

Comparatively, main rival Apple is enjoying decent sales of its iPhone 5S and 5C handsets.

Both companies will need to keep a weather eye on the smartphone market’s horizon, though, as growth from Chinese smartphone vendors such as Huawei threaten to steal some of the market share from the leading brands.
