Google unveils Nexus 6P and 5X smartphones (Wired UK)

Google has announced two Nexus phones, the 5X and the 6P.

The Nexus 6P, designed by Huawei, is the first all-metal body Nexus phone, with a 5.7-inch display. It features a 64-bit processor, with a USB Type C port, which is reversible and charges quicker than the previous standard.

The 6P also has “the best camera we’ve ever put into a Nexus device” according to Google, with a 12.3-megapixel, f/2.0 aperture snapper on the back, and a high-resolution 8-megapixel front-facing camera.

It also has a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, which will wake up the phone and work with Android Pay for mobile payments. Obviously it also runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The Nexus 6P ($499) which comes in frost white, aluminium, and graphite, also features:

  • Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor
  • 6.27-inch WQHD display
  • 3450mAh battery
  • Dual front-facing speakers

The Nexus 5X, which is built by LG, is an update to the “iconic” Nexus 5 Google said — offering high performance but in a lower cost. It features a 64-bit processor, with a 1.55 micron camera, which has a laser-assisted autofocus, dual flash and can record in 4K, a Nexus Imprint fingerprint sensor and USB Type-C charging port.

The Nexus 5X ($379) also features:

  • 2,700 mAh battery
  • 5.2-inch, 1080P display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor
  • 2GB RAM

Google said that the new devices would experience battery life of about 30 percent longer than previous Nexus phones when the screen is off. It also said that Android 6.0 Marshmallow would arrive imminently for users with compatible phones running pure Android.

Both phones use a new “Android Sensor Hub”, which packs the accelerometer, gyroscope and other sensors into one chip, and makes it possible for your Nexus device to collect more data about you without drawing too much power.

[With] Material Design, which you’ve seen over the last couple of years, there’s been a big focus in aesthetics and design overall,” Sandeep Waraich, a product manager on the new phones, told WIRED US. “And that is reflected in the devices as well. We really wanted to make something with a lot of care.”

The phones are available in the UK for pre-order via the Google Store immediately.
