Hasbro’s spooky Joy For All robot cat is the only friend you’ll ever need (Wired UK)

Cats may be adorable, but they also consume time and energy — and they’re expensive. So what do you do if you want the companionship of a cute feline friend without the commitment? Hasbro has the answer.

Joy For All is a new range of lifelike robotic pets designed to “bring comfort, companionship and fun to your elder loved ones”. The pets have realistic fur, purr and meow just like a real life cat, and are fitted with sensors that respond to petting just as a normal cat would.

Unlike a real cat, the pets also have bonus features of ‘not waking you up at 5am by standing on your face’ and ‘knowing whether it wants to be inside or outside’.

The robotic pets will move their head towards your hand, as if demanding attention, and even roll over for a belly rub if its back is rubbed for long enough. It preserves battery by ‘falling asleep’ when left alone for several minutes.

The cats come in a range of colours — orange tabby, silver and creamy white — and cost $99 (£65). Hasbro is likely to release other companion animals in the future.

Robotic pets are currently experiencing their moment in the spotlight — a similar robotic pet, Paro the seal, has recently been featured in Aziz Ansari’s popular Netflix series Master of None, as an aid to a character’s war veteran grandfather.
