High-speed WiFi rolls into St Pancras station

St Pancras International to get high-speed WiFi

St Pancras International station is to be covered by a free high-speed, high-capacity WiFi network to ensure travellers at the terminus can get online and download content in rapid time.

The owner of the station, HS1, has signed a deal with WiFi provider WIFI Metropolis to, firstly, improve the coverage of WiFi across the station, covering both the domestic area of the station and international departures.

WIFI Metropolis will also improve coverage at HS1’s three other stations that service the Eurostar: Stratford, Ebbsfleet and Ashford.

Once the coverage is improved the capacity work will begin, with plans to provide 20 times the existing capacity by autumn 2014, meaning 7,000 people could stream HD content simultaneously.

The upgrade will require WIFI Metropolis to replace the existing Xirrus 24 single radio unit access points with 54 multi-radio access points, and improve the fibre ring that supports the network from 200Mbps to 1Gbps.

HS1 said the free WiFi service would be funded through advertising.

Wendy Spinks, commercial director of HS1 Ltd, said with more travellers than ever accessing information on-the-go from mobile devices, the time was right to boost the station’s WiFi offering.

“Whether commuters are rushing to catch a train and want to download the latest film for their journey or find themselves between meetings with nowhere to work from, this new technology will completely change the way visitors can use their time in the station.”

As well as the WiFi upgrade HS1 also said it would be releasing a special St Prancas app that will provide special offers, travel information and a brief history of the iconic terminus.

The upgrade will further enhance the WiFi services across London’s transport network, which has seen 137 London Underground stations installing WiFi services from Virgin Media, helping people stay online even when deep underground.
