Dominic West turned up as Flashman on the Mayfair bookshop, Heywood Hill, in the present day, to launch the store’s sale of George MacDonald Fraser’s library, together with his childhood copy of Tom Brown’s Schooldays.

The sale of the library coincides with the discharge by his household of MacDonald Fraser’s fascinating, unpublished account of how Flashman sprang to life.

“I had written what could be referred to as an introductory chapter about this boozy previous veteran pouring out his soul on Mafeking Night to some nameless listener; I assume, however I’m unsure, that I referred to as the veteran Flashman, having in thoughts Thomas Hughes’s character. Anyway, I discarded the introduction, which wasn’t good, and it has in all probability been destroyed, until it’s in a trunk someplace,” MacDonald Fraser wrote within the unpublished account.

“‘How did you get the thought?’ is a query I have been requested advert nauseam, and the reply is that I don’t know. I learn Tom Brown’s Schooldays as a toddler, and probably on later events; I discovered Flashman probably the most hanging character within the ebook, and suspect that Hughes did, too – and doubtless wrote Flashman out of the story as a result of he realised that, if he didn’t, the deplorable lout would take over the guide.”

“Possibly it was merely boyhood recollection that prompted it. I definitely don’t keep in mind considering, ‘Flashman – eureka!’ Anyway, someplace round April ’sixty six, when I was forty one years previous, I sat down to write down Flashman, working within the kitchen after I got here residence from work within the small hours.”

“I started the place Hughes had left off, within the fashion of a memoir; since I knew from inner proof in Tom Brown the date of Flashman’s expulsion from Rugby, and, since I had decided that he was the type of rotter whose profession was sure to lie within the military, numerous plot factors recommended themselves directly – Lord Cardigan, the First Afghan War, and so on. But I had no concept, when I began, of any coherent storyline: Flashman can be a cad and a coward, however I would simply plunge forward and see the place my creativeness took me.”

His creativeness introduced eleven additional Flashman novels, after that first one, merely referred to as Flashman, revealed in 1969, bought 200,000 copies in paperback.

Here’s hoping that the sale of MacDonald Fraser’s library will revive curiosity in his creation – one of many nice rogues of literature.
