Huddle secures $51m in funding

UK success story Huddle has secured $51m of funding which it will use to grow the company and expand on the capabilities of its cloud collaboration platform.

The majority investment came from Zouk Capital. Nathan Medlock, a partner at Zouk, will join the Huddle board as part of the funding round.

Alastair Mitchell outlines Huddle's future for 2015Alastair Mitchell, chief executive of Huddle, explained to V3 that Huddle will use the funding to add “more functionality and the ability to serve more customers”.

“We are doubling the size of our development team and we’re very proud to have a development team based in London. We will be adding capability to serve our customers across the world,” he said.

“We have offices in London, San Francisco, where we’re headquartered, Washington DC and New York. And we’ll be adding people to all of those to serve more and more customers, focusing on our core [enterprise] market to become the leading player in those markets.”

Mitchell went on to outline his vision for Huddle’s long-term future and how the $51m will be pivotal in enabling the company to realise its ambitions.

“We have a vision for the future that sees everyone in an entire [enterprise] ecosystem collaborating, working and sharing, all on Huddle,” he said.

Citing Huddle customer KPMG as an example, he added: “You’ve got everyone in KPMG, you’ve got all of the people they work with, their different consultants, auditors and lawyers, you’ve got all of their customers, all of this ecosystem, all working on Huddle sharing and working seamlessly together.”

2014 has been a busy year for Huddle. The company revealed a secure publishing platform in August that offers analytics to track the distribution and readership of corporate documents.

Scaling up is also likely to help Huddle offer more services to the public sector in 2015. Mitchell said that the company is seeing growing use of its service in NHS and local councils, alongside a healthy central government customer base.

“Local government and the NHS are actually the fastest growing spenders with Huddle in the UK government, and that is all coming from G-Cloud. We think we are seeing that across other bits of G-Cloud as well,” he added.

Huddle is likely to need the injection of funding to secure its position in the enterprise collaboration market. Cisco and Box have recently teamed up to  develop collaboration and content services.
