The award-winning poet, author and civil rights activist Maya Angelou has died at her home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina aged 86.

Angelou was born Marguerite Ann Johnson in St. Louis 1928.

She was best known for her series of seven autobiographies; the best known being I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which was published in 1969 and chronicles her early childhood.

Angelou received a number of awards and honours during her lifetime, including three Grammys for her spoken word albums, thirty honorary degrees and a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
