BERLIN: Sony has unveiled its latest tablet, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, touting the tiny Android device as the thinnest ever made.

The 8in Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact continues Sony’s ongoing work to design its devices to be as small and light as possible. The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact’s is 6.4mm thin and has travel-friendly weight of 270g.

Despite being thin, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact has been designed to meet IP65 and IP68 certification standards, meaning it is both dust and waterproof.

Sony has loaded the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact with a host of top-end components including an 8in Full HD display with Triluminos, Live Colour LED and X-Reality screen technology.

These technologies aim to improve colour vibrancy and brightness levels, and ensure the device remains usable even when faced with adverse lighting conditions, such as direct sunlight.

Sony listed the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact’s 8.1MP rear camera with Exmor RS as another key selling point, claiming it will easily be able to outperform the imaging offerings of competing small form factor tablets.

The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will run using a quad-core 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor paired with 3GB of RAM, and it will offer users up to 13 hours of multimedia use off one charge.

Sony’s also made a number of software additions to the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact’s Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. These include its PlayStation 4 (PS4) Remote Play service and Xperia Email, Calendar and Contacts apps. Remote Play is a consumer-focused service designed to let the tablet double as a PS4 controller.

The Xperia Email, Calendar and Contacts apps can be synced using Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS). The EAS connection offers a variety of security and mobile-management powers to IT managers, and boosts the Xperia Z3 Tablet’s bring your own device (BYOD) appeal.

There is currently no exact date for when the Xperia Z3 Tablet will launch in the UK or any information on how much it will cost. But Sony has revealed that the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will launch globally, in both LTE and Wi-Fi variants from autumn 2014.
