iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus preorders pass four million

Apple touts record preorder numbers for new iPhone devices

Apple has revealed that more than four million orders for its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones were placed within the first 24 hours of the handsets being made available for preorder.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook said that the preorder figure was a new record for the company. “iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do,” he said.

“Preorders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday [19 September].”

Apple did not list how many orders it had received for each particular device.

However, this huge demand means many buyers are likely to have to wait several weeks for their orders, with shipping for devices pushed back by as much as 3-4 weeks on the Apple website for most versions of both devices.

Initially the phone will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK, with eager fans already queuing outside stores hoping to some of the first to get their hands on the new devices.

The iPhone 6 has a 4.7in screen and will come running the new iOS 8 operating system. The iPhone 6 Plus has an even larger 5.5in screen. Both devices also have the new Apple Pay system that uses near-field communication (NFC) technology, the first Apple smartphones to feature this capability.

Both devices come in three storage options – 16GB, 64GB and 128GB – and in three colours: gold, space grey and silver.

Pricing for the iPhone 6 range is either £539, £619 or £699 relative to the storage option chosen, while the iPhone 6 Plus is either £619, £699 or £789 again dependent on storage. Pricing from operators varies.
