iPhone 6S will be unveiled on 9 September with a Siri theme

Apple has confirmed details of its next iPhone launch event, which will take place at 6pm BST (10am PT) on 9 September in San Francisco.

The event follows Apple’s usual pattern for iPhone releases, with an early September unveiling followed by the smartphone going on sale around 10 days later.

The invitation is typically bare on details, simply asking the selected group to join Apple for an “invitation-only event at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 9, at 10:00am”.

The only clue to the direction of the next iPhone – which is heavily rumoured to be the iPhone 6S, although Apple could surprise us all with a leap to the iPhone 7 – is the heading of the invitation: “Hey Siri, give us a hint.”

iPhone 7 invite 9 September

This has led to much speculation that the upcoming device will have much more of a focus on Apple’s voice-activated personal assistant, perhaps in response to efforts from rivals like Google Now and Microsoft Cortana.

As well as taking the wraps off its next iPhone, there have also been reports that Apple will launch an iPad Pro and an iPhone 6C in a smaller 4in format on 9 September. iOS 9, Mac OS X El Capitan and watchOS 2 should also be getting their official releases out of their current beta versions.

Apple has not confirmed any official details about the next iPhone, but it is likely that the design will be the same as the current model, based on Apple’s two-year major refresh cycle – the iPhone 6 was a big overhaul – although it could have a toughened case owing to ‘bendgate’ problems and possibly a scratch-proof sapphire display.

There have also been reports that the display on the iPhone 7 could be curved, similar to the Galaxy S6 Edge+, and will feature the same Force Touch technology introduced in Apple’s first 12in MacBook, technology that allows a touch-sensitive surface to register degrees of pressure as well as movement.

The iPhone 7 is tipped to run Apple’s next-generation A9 processor, and will ship with iOS 9, which offers a battery saving mode and Proactive Siri with context-based suggestions.

The iPhone 6S/iPhone 7 will also reportedly be the first to dump the current 16GB storage version, and will instead be made available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models. The 32GB model disappeared from the roster last year.

We will be live-blogging the launch event, so join V3 on 9 September at 6pm for the big unveiling.
