A six-year-old girl was run over and killed by a Land Rover as she darted across the road to hug her father.

Lara Fernandes-Pontes was being picked up by her parents from a friend’s birthday party when she spotted her father waiting in the family car.

In her excitement, she raced into the path of the Land Rover Discovery and was hit.

Paramedics attended the scene before she was airlifted to Watford General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Although her parents were too distraught to talk, Lara’s cousins posted tributes to their ‘little angel’ on Facebook.

Paula Pontes changed her profile picture to a shot of herself with Lara, posting: ‘You will always be remembered with much love, my princess.’

Marcio Fernandes Xoio added: ‘I used to always have a go at you for having your skirt so high at such a young age… RIP little angel.’

Another cousin, Jessica Fernandes Oliveira, spoke to the Daily Mirror from the South Oxhey home of Lara’s parents, Andre and Marlene, saying: ‘This is devastating news for our family. Lara was like my little sister.

‘She will be eternally missed and remain in my heart, for-ever treasuring her beautiful smile that created wonderful memories in the short time she had been with us.’

Police said the driver was unhurt and an investigation was ongoing.
