A learner driver car-jacked his instructor in the middle of a lesson in a row over payment, police have said.

The 22-year-old was arrested on suspicion of robbery and assault today after allegedly attacking the 56-year-old instructor in Erdington, Birmingham.

It is alleged the suspect, who has not been named, stopped the car during the lesson yesterday afternoon and punched his instructor.

He then fled in the victim’s Nissan Note, police say, before returning and attacking the man again as he called the police.

Det con Darren Wilkie said he had ‘certainly not encountered an incident like this before’.

‘It appears the man owed money for earlier lessons and, when the instructor asked for payment his student responded aggressively,’ he explained.

‘The instructor was punched in the face and attacked again minutes later.

‘Thankfully the instructor suffered just cuts and bruises but was understandably shocked to have been attacked by someone he was tutoring.’

Police are yet to find the victim’s car and have appealed for any witnesses to contact the West & Central Acquisitive Crime Team in Harborne police station on 101.
