LEDs go origami with the Nanoleaf : TreeHugger

We didn’t cover the NanoLight when it was up on Kickstarter last year. Somehow it had a handmade look that I found hard to take seriously, in a business where it is competing against serious big boys like Philips and General Electric and all of China. Even as it blew through its Kickstarter, raising ten times as much as they were seeking, it seemed like one of those that would never see the light of day.

Wow, was I wrong. Now rebranded the Nanoleaf, this LED wonder is very much for sale and does things that the big boys don’t even come close to.

The Nanoleaf really is a whole different kind of device from any other LED. It is actually a printed circuit board with LEDs mounted on it, which is then folded up into a bulb shape. Because the bulbs are separated and ventilated, no big heavy heat sink is required.

Because it is mostly board, it can be printed on and turned into a statement of whatever you want to say.

This is a very powerful bulb, with the brightest pumping out 1800 lumens at a very efficient 150 lumens per watt of warm 3000K light. They claim it will last 27 years.

The new Nanoleaf Bloom has a really terrific feature baked into its circuit boards: you can dim it without a dimmer switch. Once it is on you flick your light switch on and off and it starts dimming automatically. When you get to the light level you want, flick the light switch again and it stops right there.

I learned a real lesson from co-founder Christian Yan, who I met at the big interior design show, IIDEX, in Toronto. Just because something is competing with Cree or GE or Philips doesn’t mean that smart people with great engineering and design skills can’t succeed in a tough game. Because these guys have simply out-designed them. Buy lots of these at Nanoleaf.

Oh, and they are serious about their green cred. Their mission statement, which I had to add to the post:

The focus of our company is energy conservation. We center every aspect of our work at Nanoleaf on producing higher energy efficiency, reducing Carbon emissions, and creating ecological value in all of our products in the most creative and enjoyable way possible. Ultimately, we want to make the world a greener and brighter place for everyone!
