A man who was pepper sprayed during a confrontation with police has drowned after running into a lake, Sussex Police have said.

Leon Stent got into a confrontation with officers responding to reports of a man being drunk and abusive at an East Sussex campsite at around 11:20pm on May 17.

The 30-year-old, who was thought to be visiting friends at Coghurst Hall holiday park in Hastings, ran away from officers after being pepper sprayed.

Ch Insp Warren Franklin said officers and friends encouraged Mr Stent to get out of the water but he ‘got into difficulties’.

‘Officers used boats to get onto the lake but could not find any trace of him,’ he said.

‘A large-scale search of the lake was launched by officers with other members of the emergency services as well as the surrounding area.

‘Sadly, at around 3pm on Sunday, a body was found by divers from Sussex Police’s Specialist Search Unit.

‘Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this tragic time.’

A post-mortem will be held in due course and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed of the incident.
