A chocoholic thief has been sentenced to five months in one of Colombia’s most notorious prisons for stealing chocolate bars worth less than £5.
Luis Augusto Mora, a self-confessed chocolate addict, was caught stealing two boxes of Jumbo bars, a locally-made snack, from a Bogotá supermarket.
Mora was sentenced to five months in La Picota, one of the country’s harshest prisons, notorious for its appalling conditions and the gangs and paramilitary political groups that run the facility.
The severity of Mr Mora’s sentence caught the attention of Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos, who remarked in an interview on Tuesday that minor crimes like that of Mr Mora’s should not waste prosecutors’ time and effort.
The prosecutors have released a statement on behalf of Mr Mora, saying that he is expressing regret for his actions and that he will ‘never again touch a chocolate in my life.’
