Microsoft pushes out Windows 10 Mobile preview Build 10512

Windows 10 Mobile still being worked on

Microsoft has delivered an updated build of the Windows 10 Mobile operating system for smartphones to testers, bringing improvements in overall stability and performance as the firm readies the platform for an expected autumn release.

Build 10512 of the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview began rolling out to testers on the Windows Insider test programme overnight. Microsoft said that there had been a slight hiatus in updates for the mobile version of the platform caused by the launch of Windows 10 for PCs at the end of July, but that it is expected to pick up again between now and the launch.

Gabe Aul, Microsoft’s director of programme management for the Windows Fundamentals team, said on the Windows blog that the team had been very focused on the Windows 10 release for PCs and tablets, and that they needed to do some preparatory work for Windows 10 Mobile to move to a new code branch.

“I expect the builds to be out more frequently again as we go forward from here. Our major focus on Windows 10 Mobile right now is on improvements to core quality,” he said.

Known problems with this build include bugs in the Mobile Hotspot function for sharing the phone’s internet connection, and two-factor authentication no longer working. The Insider Hub is also not yet included in this new build, and Aul said that Microsoft is working to bring this back into new releases.

Microsoft has still to fix an official date for availability of Windows 10 Mobile, saying only that it will “begin rolling out this fall”. However, suggestions from some sources point to a November launch.
