Microsoft Surface Pro 3 to cost up to £1,649 and will not ship until late August

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 will cost £1,649 for the top end model, which may put a dampener on sales of the new Windows 8.1 tablet, especially as buyers in the UK will not receive the device until the end of August.

The Surface Pro 3, which was announced at an event in New York on Tuesday, offers a number of enhancements over earlier models, such as the option of a more powerful Core i7 processor, a larger 12in screen with a high resolution 2160×1440 Cleartype display, enhanced kickstand and improved Type Cover keyboard.

However, at the starting price of £639, buyers can only expect to get hold of the baseline model, which sports a Core i3 processor and 64GB of SSD storage. This price includes the Surface Pen stylus, but not the new Type Cover keyboard, which costs an extra £109.99.

And while customers in the US and Canada can expect to get hold of the Surface Pro 3 from 20 June, anyone pre-ordering in the UK may have to wait until 31 August, according to the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft has been pushing the Surface Pro 3 as the tablet capable of replacing a laptop, and has caught on to the fact that users clearly preferred the greater processing power that was on offer when it launched the earlier Surface Pro 2.

However, in order to get the full power of an Intel Core i7 chip, UK buyers will have to shell out £1,339 for a model with 256GB of storage, or £1,649 for the top end model which comes with 512GB of storage.

For this price, buyers would be able to get a really premium laptop. Microsoft might justifiably argue that the top-end Surface Pro 3 is the equivalent of a premium laptop, especially given its high-definition display.

But at £1,649, the Surface Pro 3 is way beyond the price of most other tablets, including Apple’s iPad with Retina display, and even costs more than any of Apple’s MacBook Air models, which top out at £999 in the UK.
