Microsoft updates Windows 10 Mobile code to Build 10586.71 as upgrade release nears

Microsoft has delivered yet another update of the preview version of Windows 10 Mobile to testers, but has yet to give a clear indication of when existing Windows Phone users will receive the upgrade, or which existing devices it will run on.

The latest Cumulative Update for the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview updates the build number to 10586.71 and comprises a number of bug fixes, along with a Configuration Update that makes changes to ensure that devices continue to receive future updates, such as replacing a soon to expire certificate, Microsoft said.

There are performance and reliability improvements for Windows Update, while SD card detection has been improved on boot and after insertion so that File Explorer now correctly handles the removal of an SD card if this is set as the default location for app or photo data, Microsoft said.

Other improvements cover Microsoft’s Edge browser, and fix problems re-connecting to Bluetooth devices with which a Windows Phone had previously paired, and using Cortana with the Microsoft Band.

“We have continued to address feedback we receive on Windows 10 Mobile as well as the upgrade experience from Windows Phone 8.1,” said Gabe Aul, Microsoft’s director of programme management for the Windows Fundamentals team, writing on the Windows Experience blog.

“In some cases, these improvements will only be seen when upgrading from Windows Phone 8.1, such as improvements in cellular and WiFi data profile migration or the availability of SensorCore APIs.”

Windows 10 Mobile is the version of Microsoft’s latest operating system for smartphones, but it is now six months since Windows 10 for PCs was officially released, and Microsoft has yet to disclose when existing Windows Phone users will see it.

The upgrade code was due for rollout before the end of 2015 when Microsoft launched new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL handsets with the official Windows 10 Mobile release code, but the firm conceded that the update for existing handsets would not be delivered until sometime early this year.
