Microsoft’s week: Cloud drives Q1 results, Outlook problems for Mac users, Edge extensions delayed

Another fairly quiet week for Microsoft was topped off by the news that the firm’s financial results for the last quarter were better than expected, thanks to demand for its cloud services.

Elsewhere, the troubles hitting Mac users running Office 2016 on the newest OS X El Capitan release continued to reverberate, while Dell unveiled another Cloud Platform System designed in partnership with Microsoft.

Microsoft’s Edge browser, meanwhile, looks set to get support for extensions later than originally planned.

Microsoft has reported its financial results for the most recent quarter, showing better performance than the markets had been expecting. The software firm attributed this to its cloud services strategy and Windows 10 providing the PC market with a shot in the arm.

Instead, Mac users who rely on Office 2016 will need to wait until Apple rolls out the next version of El Capitan and hope that it contains a fix.

Microsoft and Dell team up for new, standard ‘cloud in a box’ system

Dell and Microsoft have announced an updated version of the ‘cloud in a box’ platform launched a year ago as the Cloud Platform System.

The integrated hardware/software offering combines Dell servers and networking switches with preconfigured CPS software from Microsoft.

Microsoft Edge extensions support delayed until 2016

Microsoft’s next-generation Edge browser was meant to get an update that supports plug-in extensions, but this capability has been delayed and is now expected sometime next year.
