Microsoft’s week: Windows 10 Mobile, bug patches and software tweaks

This week has been rather quiet for Microsoft, although the company squashed bugs in Internet Explorer, JScript and Windows Shell, and released Windows 10 Insider Build 10565.

The firm also delivered the latest Windows 10 Mobile test build, while hardware company Acer released two Windows 10 optimised devices.

Patch Tuesday: Microsoft releases six security bulletins for IE, Edge and Office

Microsoft has released six security bulletins for this month’s Patch Tuesday, fixing three critical vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer, JScript and Windows Shell.

The MS15-106 update is listed as critical for IE 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 on affected Windows clients, and could allow an attacker to use remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted webpage using the browser.

Microsoft gave another hint of future Windows 10 feature updates with the rollout of Insider Preview Build 10565 to the Windows Insider programme.

Build 10565 is the third technical preview to be released since Windows 10 launched earlier this year and is the biggest yet, introducing several new features and tweaks, such as closer Skype integration.

Microsoft rolled out the latest test build for Windows 10 Mobile, the upcoming version of its operating system for smartphones, adding expected bug fixes and enhancements. But a flaw means that users can install it only from Windows Phone 8.1.

The 10549 build of the Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview was made available overnight to testers on the Fast ring of Microsoft’s Windows Insider programme. It adds a number of improvements to features like Cortana and the messaging app, as well as fixing problems uncovered by testers.

Windows 10 found its way onto more hybrid computers created by Acer as the firm revealed two devices optimised for Microsoft’s latest operating system.

Refreshing the Aspire R 14 convertible laptop and the Aspire Z3-700 all-in-one PC, Acer makes use of some of the latest Intel processors to keep Windows 10 running smoothly on its devices.

V3 has a specifications run down of the recently revealed Microsoft Surface Book, a hybrid laptop/tablet device aimed at taking on the MacBook Pro.

Unlike Apple’s device, however, the Surface Book offers more flexible functionality with the ability to switch between a traditional laptop and a tablet device not dissimilar to the company’s Surface range.
