Despite a few ruffled feathers, no fowl play was suspected at a chicken beauty pageant this week, where prize poultry strutted their stuff in the hope of being crowned top of the pecking order.

Seven chickens competed in the bizarre competition in the city of Yichang, with the winner crowned China’s most attractive hen before being auctioned off to the audience.

Gang P’eng, whose winning bird Mei ended up being the eventual winner, said the competition was ‘poor.’

‘I’m not surprised she won because my bird is an absolute beauty,’ said the farmer.

‘The others were very poor competition for her. She has always known how to impress and to catch the judge’s eye.’

The birds were judged on attributes like feather density, body proportions, their walk and any ‘special talents’.

Mei won over judges and the audience with a ‘dance’ to traditional Chinese folk music, eventually being auctioned off for over £500.

The cash raised was then donated to a charity for children at the end of the sale.
